“Villains of the Silver Screen” – 4th release: Kano

I love bad guys, I love villains. They are the core of each film, even the bad one. Villains make good guys look good, and even beyond that. Great villains are memorable.

So, please welcome our next release of the “Villains of the Silver Screen”. Here we will discuss and talk about various movie villains, but will try to stay within our website’s standards.

In this release, our villain is not the “main baddie” of  the movie, yet he turned out to be the most memorable – Kano.

FILM: Mortal Kombat (1995)
PLAYED BY: Trevor Goddard (1962-2003)
PART: Secondary villain

TYPE: laid back, knife-wielding, one-eyed criminal

CRIMES: doesn’t actually kill anyone, however the looks say the opposite.

Kano is not really a movie villain – it all started with the “Mortal Kombat” video game, where Kano was portrayed by Richard Divizio. In 1995, when the Paul Anderson “Mortal Kombat” movie came out, Kano was played by Trevor Goddard (1962-2003), and in my opinion, he made a perfect Kano (which didn’t really look like the original character from the video game).

Recently Mortal Kombat got a somewhat fresh start, with “Mortal Kombat Legacy” series, where Kano was portrayed by Darren Shahlavi. As much as I respect Shahlavi, he’s a great martial artist, but somehow I cannot really see him as Kano. Trevor Goddard was better. He was scarier, tougher and funnier as well.

POSSIBILITIES: Well, since Trevor Goddard is not with us anymore (R.I.P.), and Shahlavi up to date, is the latest Kano, the direction of this character has been altered. Goddard’s portrayal of Kano was great, and stood out among other villain characters (Shang Tsung, Goro, the ninjas), he was vivid, memorable, and cool.

Who could play Kano?: So far, Kano has been portrayed by three people – Richard Divizio (Mortal Kombat original game and sequels), Trevor Goddard (Mortal Kombat 1995 film), and Darren Shahlavi (Mortal Kombat Legacy short series). There were some rumors that a feature film will be made, based on the MK Legacy series, and I assume that Kano will again be portrayed by Shahlavi.

Stay tuned for another release of “Villains of the Silver Screen”. If you have some villain that we could discuss, feel free to let us know!
