EX2 + PG13…= ?

So, it seems like the rumors about “Expendables 2” being PG13 rated are true after all. I remember hearing something on this back when the film was still in pre-production, then closer to New Year, rumors started to come up again.

Couple of days ago, Chuck Norris said the film is going to be PG-13 rated. He said it was “for the kids”, others believe its “for the better Return on investment”…

The first Expendables film was rated R, and had a budget of some $80 million. A total gross worldwide was around $274 million.

Now studios of course are thinking if an R-rated film gathered this much, a PG-13 rated movie (considering all the attractions of the sequel) would bring even more money.

So, in order to reach a wider audience (of kids), it was decided to make “Expendables 2” a PG-13. Sylvester Stallone confirmed this fact, speaking to “Aint it Cool News” by saying:

“The film is fantastic with Van Damme turning in an inspired performance… Our final battle is one for the ages. The PG13 rumor is true, but before your readers pass judgement,  trust me when I say this film is LARGE in every way and  delivers on every level. This movie touches on many emotions which we want to share with the broadest audience possible, BUT, fear not, this Barbeque of Grand scale Ass Bashing will not leave anyone hungry…”

Maybe it will not, I am sure Stallone knows what he’s doing. On the other hand, I assume he doesn’t have as much control over the sequel, as he had over the original, so the studio executives are dictating their conditions.

Needless to say, a lot of people are unhappy with “Expendables 2” being PG-13, as they were expecting “hard-hitting 80s action” movie, which is hard to picture without f-bombs and other “nice things”.

First “Expendables” film hit big overseas, and out there, I assume, people would care more for the action itself, rather than bad language. At least, I hope Simon West, who’s directing the sequel, would give the fans what they want in this regard.

As for me, I would still watch the film, of course. This is probably the one and only chance to see the great action heroes of the 80s and 90s on the screen in one movie, as Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Willis and Schwarzenegger probably will not be in “Expendables 3”, if it ever gets made. Something tells me, the next part of the franchise will feature more “young blood”, to probably give “Expendables” a different direction.

Maybe, they will also manage to get Steven Seagal, who will portray a monk of some sort, and who’d be asking Expendables “to solve problems via diplomatic ways, instead of raw force”.

Considering that from an R-rated film (Expendables 1) we are going into PG-13 (Expendables 2), then “diplomatic ways of solving problems” seems like a logical extension for “Expendables 3″…

I hope I am being simply pessimistic as usual, and this will not happen.
