Predator sequel-reboot: 3 ideas for a new film

Recent news indicate that the 80’s sci-fi action classic “Predator” will return to our silver screens in a slightly different shape or form, as the film is getting a reboot.

An actor from the original film, but more known as a screenwriter (Lethal Weapon) and director (Iron Man 3), Shane Black, is attached to direct the new film. Black, along with Dred Dekker are working on the script for the 20th Century Fox.

Fox has found ways to keep Predator alive since its initial outing. There was a Schwarzenegger-less sequel, Predators, in 1990. Robert Rodriguez produced an installment of the franchise in 2010. Fox also combined it with its Alien franchise for a couple of Alien vs. Predator movies released in 2004 and 2007, respectively.

Collider has recently spoken with Black, who said that the film will be a “sequel”, not a reboot. He said: “As far as Fred and I are concerned anyway, why start over, when you’ve all this rich mythology yet to mine?”

Black said he doesn’t like reboots generally, but can “really get behind inventive sequels”, noting that he likes “the idea of expanding and exploring the existing Predator mythology, rather than hitting the restart button.”

Having a reboot didn’t sound like a great idea anyway, so if Black does want the film to be a sequel, and if he really wishes to use Predator’s “rich mythology”, then why not? This brings us to what exactly we could have…

Raphael Adolini, 1715
At the end of “Predator 2” (1990), one of the Predators gives Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) an antique pistol, that has “Raphael Adolini 1715” written on it. There was even a comic about this Adolini guy, a pirate who disappeared along with his crew in the Bermuda Triangle in 1718. There was also an idea for the “Predator” film, which would have taken place in the 1700’s. This was never realized, but since now a new film is in the works, this could be an interesting turn to explore Predator’s “rich mythology”.

Back to the jungle: Jim Harper and green berets
In the original “Predator” film, Dutch (Schwarzenegger) and his team find a bunch of dead bodies. Billy (Sonny Landham) says they were “green berets”. Dutch later recognizes one of them, as “Jim Harper”. So, if Black and Dekker wanted to return to the jungle, they could use this tiny story line, and focus on “Jim Harper and his team of green berets” going into the jungle on some kind of mission. To make sure they won’t look like sissies, the writers could thrown in another predator (making them two), one of which would be eventually killed, and the other one would live to kill Harper and his men, and “wait” for Schwarzenegger to arrive.

Predator: the beginning
This idea could start off on a separate planet, where the predators live on their own. The story could focus on the Predator that was “sent” to Earth after (insert something here). Or, maybe he was exiled? This idea could also introduce female predators, which would somehow explain how the creatures reproduce and add more depth to the predator character itself.

Using the “1715” idea sounds interesting, as there’s a lot of time between 1700’s and 1980’s (the time of the original film), thus other Predator films could’ve been made in that time frame.

In any case, since Dekker and Black are already working on the script, the ideas mentioned above might not even be used for the film. We shall wait and see.
